League name changes and notes

  •  1: In 1919 Arsenal appear in Division 1, despite finishing only 5th in Division 2 in 1914/15 (WWI had interrupted the league). They took Tottenham's place who had finished bottom of Division 1 in 1914/15, but who would have expected to retain their place, as the league was to be expanded. It was far more complex (read this), but is still a source of debate in north London.
  •  2: Sheffield Wednesday were known as Wednesday or The Wednesday until June 1929, when the name was officially changed to Sheffield Wednesday.
  •  3: Up until the 1975/76 season goal average was used to seperate teams on the same points. From the 1976/77 season onwards it was decided on goal difference.
  •  4: In the 1990/91 season, Arsenal were deducted two points for disciplinary reasons.
  •  5: The league was known as the First Division until the end of season 1991/92. It then changed to the Premier League in season 1992/93 and now the Premier League in 2007/08.

Research

I've cross referenced as much as possible and added links to the new club website where possible. Many thanks goes to the RSSSF Archive, which was an invaluable source of information whenever an insolvable fact was needed. If you need to find a football answer, it will be on there somewhere.
